James Gunn Responds To Suicide Squad vs. Justice League Movie Pitch - Screen Rant

James Gunn shares his thoughts on a Suicide Squad vs. the Justice League movie pitch. Though he's best known for his Guardians of the Galaxy movies over at Marvel, Gunn made the jump to DC for his latest project, The Suicide Squad. The daring, R-rated action fest arrived in theaters and on HBO Max this past weekend, bringing with it a much better take on the titular villain team than the 2016 Suicide Squad. The movie earned glowing reviews from critics and positive responses from fans, and it reportedly had the second-biggest HBO Max debut.

Later this year, Gunn will return to Marvel for Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, but he's far from done with DC. In addition to the Suicide Squad spin-off series Peacemaker, which will debut on HBO Max in January, the writer-director has ideas for more projects set within the DCEU. Gunn recently stated he would love to make more movies centered on villains, and DC Films head Walter Hamada is confident that he'll be working with Gunn again.

For now, Gunn's next DC project beyond Peacemaker is unclear, but CNA's Genevieve Loh presented him with an interesting idea: Justice League vs. Suicide Squad. In a recent interview, Loh mentioned that there are fans who would like to see the DCEU's two biggest teams go head to head and asked Gunn if he would be willing to write and direct it. "You've convinced me. Okay," Gunn said. When pushed to reveal just how he would bring them together, he continued:

"I don't know. I would have to think about it. [Laughs] I haven't put any thought into a Suicide Squad vs. Justice League movie. But it's not a bad idea, you know. But I think I've got to figure out who the Justice League is first, because I have no clue. I'm in the middle here of DC, everybody's always asking me, 'Is Henry Cavill still Superman?' I don't know who Superman is! Who knows?"

It's true that the DCEU's current iteration of the Justice League remains a mystery. Though the team came together for 2017's Justice League, it was a poorly-received misfire that had fans clamoring for the director's cut. Zack Snyder's Justice League revived the DCEU's original plans earlier this year, but the powers that be currently have no intention of reinstating them into canon. As a result, the franchise's plans for the superteam is unclear, though producer Charles Roven recently hinted a Justice League 2 could happen several years down the line.

Whether that will have any ties to The Suicide Squad is another thing. Gunn's movie could certainly lead to sequels, which would pave the way for the characters to return for future installments. As he said in the interview, it's almost more of a question of who is in the Justice League. Henry Cavill's Superman might be out, but there are other members of the team who are still around, like Aquaman (Jason Momoa) and Wonder Woman (Gal Gadot). At the same time, fans likely wouldn't accept another Justice League without Cavill, considering the support the actor has. A DC movie pitting the two teams against each other would be very interesting, but only time will tell if it's in the cards.
